Boyzone
MEN Arena
March 5, 2011
When Boyzone burst into the UK’s collective consciousness in 1994, they were the quintessential boy band.
They were put together by Louis Walsh the year before they set off putting out cover versions under a name that perfectly encapsulates the essence of the whole manufactured pop industry.
A million teenage girls swooned, but that was almost two decades ago and, of course, the band have grown up.
It’s a bunch of fellas in their thirties that we see before us, men who have experienced all the normal things life brings, but also one of those events you shouldn’t have to experience until you’re at least of pensionable age – the sudden death at 33 of one of their number, Stephen Gately.
This tour is the first since Gately’s passing and it showcases the album Brother, an album that was, in part, created and recorded in those raw months immediately after his death. It’s fitting then that a good deal of the show is in tribute to the missing star and there are regular tributes to Gately throughout.
Some are simply sad but most provoke bittersweet smiles as they recall stories such as the unfounded rumour that he was to star in Baywatch.
The guys take to the stage with a darker more dramatic feel, beginning the show dressed in outfits that look like a cross between the bad guy in a Western and Father Damo the rebel priest in Father Ted.
The dancers that stretch and spin around them sport black lace and feathers like renegade performers let go from a summer season in Blackpool for being just too evil.
Somewhat inevitably, much of the material from Brother reveals a much maturer sound; but there are the familiar tunes of the early years for the fans to sing along to – Words, Love Me For A Reason and When The Going Gets Tough among others.
It’s a spectacle of a show with numerous costume changes, yet it also manages to maintain its warmth with each of the four taking turns to chat to the crowd and Keith Duffy in particular giving a little tribute to his Corrie colleagues, some of whom were in: ‘Hello Manchester, or should I say Weatherfield?’
Bobbing down to the small stage in the middle of the auditorium for the encore, the band ended the show getting just that bit closer to the fans and then they were gone.
Despite all of their disparate projects, with a new album on the horizon they’re sure to be back soon.
